PGA WEST® has completed the summer greens renovation project for the Pete Dye-designed Mountain and Dunes Courses. Tim Liddy, ASGCA, led the restoration project to return the golf course greens back to their original glory. Both championship courses are slated to reopen November 1st.
“Tim has an instinctive grasp of Mr. Dye’s creative vision for the Mountain and Dunes Courses,” said PGA WEST Executive Director Ben Dobbs. “He and his team expanded several of the green backs to their initial size; we are thrilled with the outcome and can’t wait for golfers around the world to experience the phenomenal playing conditions."
Liddy, who collaborated closely with Pete Dye for nearly three decades, likened this project to an exciting archeological dig, uncovering the original aspects of the greens and bringing them back to their earlier beauty and contours. The restoration was handled with great care and precision to reclaim the visual impact that had been lost. The work was performed by carefully hand digging around the bunkers and green to unearth the original sand lines. Turf was then removed, as well as layers of organic material that had built up over many years.
“Restoring them to their original size, shape and contour immediately brought back the wonderful, sculptured quality of these unique set of greens,” said Liddy. “The courses will have even greater appeal to golfers of all levels as, in addition to enlarging the greens, we’ve recaptured back corners that were previously lost.”
PGA WEST® Golf Course Superintendent Justin Beck who oversees both courses, noted that TifEagle bermudagrass has taken root with both courses on an aggressive irrigation and fertilization schedule to ready them for fall.
PGA WEST® is in the process of upgrading all nine of its renowned courses, representing some of the top golf course architects in the world including Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer, and Tom Weiskopf.
